Weekend Hotlist: Collage Concert

CMU struts its stuff The Carnegie Mellon School of Music “Collage Concert” shows off its strong points by bringing together baroque music, classical, jazz, musical theater and more into a choreographed show staged by Karla Boos. Five ensembles from the CMU School of Music will combine to play and move about the Oakland Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall. The music will be eclectic, beginning with a bagpipe processional into Soldiers & Sailors, then on to works for brass quintet (Lutoslawski’s “Mini Overture”), wind ensemble (John Adams’ “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”), string quartet (Haydn’s Op. 76, No. 1), concert choir (Adolphus Hailstork’s “Nocturne and Cloths of Heaven”), guitar ensemble (Hector Villa-Lobos’ Guitar Concerto), opera (Douglas Ahlstedt sings from Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma”), as well as jazz, contemporary and baroque ensembles. The finale will be a choreographed performance of Bernstein’s “Make Our Garden Grow” from Candide. At 8 p.m. Friday; $10-$15.
