Non-Music Major FAQ

Rehearsals: The Orchestra and the Wind Ensemble rehearse TWRF 4:00-6:30 p.m. and alternate rehearsal periods.

The Major Instrumental Ensemble rehearsal/concert schedule is published on the Calendars page. Auditions are scheduled during the first week of the fall semester. Contact Sharon Johnston via email (slj@andrew.cmu.edu) for more information. All ensembles audition at least one time per year. Many ensembles reserve the right to audition several times per year. Please be prepared to play a short solo piece of your choice that will demonstrate as fully as possible your present performance capabilities.

CHORUS, Thomas Douglas, Director


Rehearsals: TR 4:00-5:20 p.m.


Auditions are scheduled during the first week of the fall semester. Sign up outside of Thomas Douglas' office during the week before the semester begins. All ensembles audition at least one time per year. Many ensembles reserve the right to audition several times per year. Please be prepared to sing a song of your choice that will demonstrate as fully as possible the present capabilities of your voice. You may also be asked to sightread a standard choral work. An accompanist will be provided.

BAROQUE ENSEMBLE, Stephen Schultz, Director


Rehearsals: MW 10:10-11:30 a.m.


Auditions are scheduled during the first two weeks of the fall semester. Contact the director, Stephen Schultz, via email (sschultz@andrew.cmu.edu) for an appointment, or see him after the first rehearsal, which you are welcome to observe (Monday, the first day of the semester, from10:10-11:30 a.m. in CFA ACH). All ensembles audition at least one time per year. Many ensembles reserve the right to audition several times per year.
Please be prepared to play or sing a short solo piece of your choice that will demonstrate as fully as possible your present performance capabilities.

JAZZ ORCHESTRA, Mark Snyder, Director


Rehearsals: Jazz Orchestra M 8:35-9:55 p.m., W 7:55-9:15 p.m.


Auditions are scheduled during the first two weeks of the fall semester. Contact the director, Mark Snyder, via email (ms86@andrew.cmu.edu) for an appointment. All ensembles audition at least one time per year. Many ensembles reserve the right to audition several times per year. Auditioning students should prepare a jazz transcription or etude that is two to five minutes in length. Students will be asked to sight read and will have the opportunity to briefly discuss their previous experience within the jazz and contemporary music idiom. Improvisation is encouraged but not required.


JIVE VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE, Elizabeth Lawrence, Director


Rehearsals: U 3:30-5:20 p.m.

Auditions are scheduled during the first two weeks of the fall semester. Contact the director, Elizabeth Lawrence, via email (blawrenc@andrew.cmu.edu) for an appointment. All ensembles audition at least one time per year. Many ensembles reserve the right to audition several times per year. Please be prepared to sing one memorized jazz/pop song, and to scat over a part of the selected song, and to sight-read a short excerpt of a song of the director’s choice. Please bring the printed music.

ALL UNIVERSITY ORCHESTRA (AUO)

CMU POPS ORCHESTRA
The CMU Pops Orchestra is student run and includes any instrumentalists who would like to play and who match the repertoire. The Orchestra performs at least once a semester. The Orchestra serves as an outlet for stress and an environment for sharing music to which all can relate. For more information, visit their page on The Bridge. 

TARTAN WIND ENSEMBLE
The TWE provides an opportunity for any person affiliated with the University, including but not limited to students, staff, faculty, or alumni, to rehearse and perform in a wind ensemble in a recreational manner. We want to provide an environment that is the middle-ground between AUO and Kiltie Band. For more information, visit their page on The Bridge.

Elective Studio lessons and studio classes are open and available to all university students. They are registered through the Music Extension office and require payment of a fee. You may choose to take lessons or classes for credit or non-credit. Payment of the fee is required in either case.

Lessons - Weekly one-on-one studio lessons for the beginner, intermediate and advanced student: 14 lessons per semester, for 30, 45, or 60 minutes per week.

Classes - Weekly small group studio classes for the beginning guitar, piano, and for the jazz piano student: 14 classes per semester, for 50 minutes per week.

Practice Rooms - CMU’s School of Music practice facilities are not available to non-major students.  Student Affairs provides practice spaces that are accessible to all students (with an ID card) in the following locations:

Fifth Avenue Neighborhood Commons (two reservable practice rooms with digital pianos, an acoustic drum set, base/guitar amps, microphone, and music stands)

Morewood Gardens main floor (two small practice rooms with digital pianos)

Additionally, some housing communities have pianos / practice rooms that are available only to the residents living there as they are located in secured non-public residential spaces.

Most School of Music classes are open to non-music majors, if you’re qualified for the class and if there’s a space available in the class. Note that spaces in introductory music classes are usually not available for the new undergraduate non-music major. (Usually music majors and returning non-music majors fill the spaces in these classes.)
