Bio

Lenny Young is a teacher, oboist, improviser, arranger and conductor.  As an oboist he has performed with the Pittsburgh, Wheeling, Youngstown, Altoona, Johnstown, Westmoreland and McKeesport Symphonies, as well as the American Wind Symphony, the Mendelssohn Choir or Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Festival Opera.   A 2015 winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society major auditions, he has worked with local conductors, composers and arrangers in productions for Resonance Works, Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theater, Point Park Conservatory, and Pennsylvania Dance Theater.  As a soloist, he composed and performed original music for Point Park Repertory Company's productions of Knights of the Round TableThe Third Lie, and Death Of A Salesman

Lenny has worked in a variety of chamber-music settings, including new music groups such as the Duquesne New Music Ensemble, Alia Musica Pittsburgh and Kamratōn.  He was a founding member of the chamber music group the Bell'Art Ensemble and also led several improvisational groups.  He has conducted the choir at Third Presbyterian Church in Shadyside since 2005. 

A native of New Castle, DE, Lenny holds BFA and MM degrees in music performance from Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to helping run the Marta Sanchez Dalcroze Training Center at Carnegie Mellon, he teaches eurhythmics, music history, music theory and solfege at Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) high school, where he also directs CAPA’s new-music ensemble CAPA Antithesis.  He was appointed Artist Lecturer in Solfege at Carnegie Mellon in the Fall of 2015.
